Walk on the wild side: Lee Westwood heading for his first major?

From just how far back will the challenge to Tom Watson's outrageous Open championship aspirations come? That's the question as the main contenders head out today on the last leg of what is turning out to be a fairytale event.

As the 59-year-old, five times champion tees off at 2.20 alongside another unlikely contender Matthew Goggin, he'll feel the breath of two of Britain's finest on the back of his neck, desperate to claim a first major, while experienced Jim Furyk and Retief Goosen are also well capable of closing the gap and overhauling the leader.

Ross Fisher - chasing the dream

Watson takes a one-stroke lead into the final round after another breathtaking performance yesterday, shooting a battling one-over-par 71 in swirling crosswinds for a four-over par total - one better than Fisher and Goggin with Westwood in a group of players at two under.

Watson kept his serene composure throughout the day and despite dropping shots at 12 and 15, holed another monster putt on 16 and two-putted 17 for another birdie to maintain his slender lead over Goggin, who returned an excellent 69 and could still be the surprise package.

Fisher, still awaiting the call from his pregnant wife, overdue for the birth of their first child, that could end his Open aspirations, held on to his 3-under par total with a level par 70, matched by Westwood, who's on two under. The danger will be that they'll be watching each other as the penultimate pairing and the chance to end Britain's major drought, instead of focussing on taming Turnberry.

Wind and and more rain is forecast for Sunday, so there's every chance that level par could yet be enough to lift the claret Jug, giving hope to every one of the 26 players within six shots of the lead.

They include US Masters champion Angel Cabrera on one over and, plus twos Justin Rose, Graeme McDowell and John Daly.
