Prince at Bristol.

Prince Andrew has been learning how to improve his golf with a visit to the Bristol-based Institute of Physics Publishing.

The seven handicap Duke of York was particularly interested in an online article by Raymond Penner on ‘the physics of golf’, especially how research discovered you can tell the difference in golf skills by measuring the downswing.

His Royal Highness, who will become captain of the R&A in September, took a copy away with him.

Commented Professor Penner: "I’m thrilled that my insights into the physics of golf are being taken on board by Prince Andrew. I hope he finds it useful the next time he plays."

'The physics of golf' reviews the work that has been carried out on the physics of the swing, the golf ball, and the golf club and includes diagrams of the 'double pendulum' model of the golf swing.

For an electronic copy of diagrams and the full article and Reports on Progress In Physics, Vol. 66, February 2003, 131-171, you can email communications officer Michelle Cain (michelle.cain@iop.org).
