US Open: Four under par could still win this!

Will Tiger Woods set the clubhouse mark?

A clubhouse target of four under par could well be good enough to win the weather-affected US Open which is entering its fifth day and could even need a play-off later today to decide the winner.

Currently at least a third of the 60 players completing the 72 holes - among them defending champion Tiger Woods - are capable of setting that mark as the field bunches up behind overnight leaders Ricky Barnes and Lucas Glover.

The pair hold a five stroke advantage over the chasing pack at the punishing Bethpage Black course near New York with England’s Ross Fisher one of many waiting to pounce when the final round resumes around midday UK time.

Barnes, a former US Amateur champion, who has done nothing of late to justify his lofty perch among the world's elite, had his score at 11-under par with an outrageous eagle early in his delayed third round but the course finally wore him down, much to the relief of USGA officials.

They see their championship courses as the ultimate examination and wish no repeat of Tiger Woods 15-under par demolition of Pebble Beach in 2000.

But after taking a one shot lead on eight-under par Barnes suffered an immediate setback with a bogey five at the 55th hole and bringing him back level with journeyman Glover, before officials suspended play because of poor light.

Fisher and playing partner David Duval, also bogeyed the first to slip back to two under, but the Wentworth youngster is still tied for third and confident, once his putting warms up, he can claim a first major title. Also on two under are World No.2 Phil Mickelson and US Ryder Cup player Hunter Mahan.

Canadian Mike Weir is holding on at one under par, while Woods is on level par alongside Retief Goosen, Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell and Dane Soren Hansen.

Even Rory McIlroy has a slim shout on +2 having already picked up two birdies in nine holes.

“If I go out and get four birdies on the last eight holes and post two under par you never know," said an ever-confident McIlroy. “But we'll see what happens. If I play the way I did for the first ten holes I'll have a good chance to get to red figures for the tournament.”

Two under, however, may just fall short. I'm more inclined to think four or even three under will at least earn a play-off. Tell us on the forum what score will set the clubhouse target.

Can Tiger still retain his title? What will be the clubhouse target?

I think Barnes & Glover will fall back - but I'd expect at least one of them to shed only a few shots.

So... I think -4 is a good shout for a winning / tieing score.

I'm going for a Barnes / Mickelson 18 hole play off.

said similar to my uninterested wife yesterday. Disappointed that Fisher and Duval got off to a bogey start but i don't fancy either barnes or glover and there's some experience behind them in the chasing pack.

Fisher.... poor guy played so, so well yesterday but couldn'y buy a putt.

TIger is out of it.

How dare he insult our intelligence by saying his striking the ball lovely but cannot buy a putt. We can see him play some terrible shots (for him), who does he think he is kidding ?

I do think the leaders will come back to the pack, they are just too inexperienced at this level and I don't think their games will hold up to the challenge. That said this is the easiest US open for years and years. Receptive greens at a US open ?????? What is the world coming to ?

Glover is just flying under the radar imo. Barnes is leading and taking all of the limelight and with his dodgy putting stroke (bloody hell it is ugly) I think he will fold.

Glover however, hmmmmmm, I think he will hold it to -4.

I just hope that Fisher and Phil can get their act together and make the playoff.

I've just been reading about Barnes' very shaky start to his final round last night. I've changed my mind, he'll wilt and fall out of contention. Glover will wobble, but the pursuers will need sub-par to catch him.

Was I right in hearing Ross Fisher covered 18 holes in 32 blows along with 37 putts??

That must have been phenominal ball striking tee to green, just proves the old adage I s'pose "drive for show..........

Glover

Bugger!

Yep Bob - who'd've thought 4 under would win it - total capitulation by some of 'em.

I see even Tiger is now daunting himself when Tiger is chasing the lead.

I thought, and hoped, Duval was going to sneak in at the death. Fisher played well, but putting looks like his achilles heel?

Speaking of Duval..... his post-round interview with Sky on  Sunday was a beacon of honesty and thoughtfully constructed answers. Better than Phil's "golly, gee whiz" burst, and Tiger's terse, up his own ars* replies.
