Wentworth member Ross Fisher just misses an eagle putt on the 18th green

Collectors of sporting memorabilia have a chance to add to their haul later this month when the Wentworth Club at Virginia Water auctions off some of the turf from the West Course greens which have staged a succession of BMW and World Match Play tournaments.

All 18 greens being dug up as part of a £4 million renovation project designed to bring Harry Colt’s original classic into the 21st century and Wentworth is offering the chance for golfers to own a section of turf lifted from one of famous 'Burma Road' putting surfaces.

Over 4,000 square metres of turf will be auctioned for charity shared equally by The Wentworth Golf & Tennis Foundation, the three charities chosen by the 2009 Wentworth Club Captains and the Children’s Charity - founded and sponsored by Wentworth’s owner Richard Caring.

Julian Small, chief executive of Wentworth Club said: “This is a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of champions in your own garden and we hope that people will make a significant donation.”

Legends such as Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods have all walked the greens over the last 80 years and Wentworth anticipates keen interest.
