Knuckling down: Mickelson with Ryder Cup partner Anthony Kim

Despite Tiger Woods being out of the picture and Padraig Harrington in the ascendency, World No. 3 Phil Mickelson has been without a major title in over 30 months.

Yet the left-hander remains a top-class performer, having twice won on the US PGA Tour during 2008, and tasted European success in China at the end of last year.

Mickelson's chasing Tiger's tail

As a model of consistency in the Majors this year - one of only two players to finish in the top-20 of all four championships along with newly crowned European No 1 Robert Karlsson - it's no wonder he's in such demand by the US Tour, where the economic downturn, TV ratings and lack of sponsors is beginning to bite.

So what about our champions? US Masters winner Trevor Immelman enjoyed Spring but struggled throughout the rest of the year while Tiger Woods was forced out with injury midway through the season in which he was runner-up at Augusta and dramatically won the US Open in California, effectively, with a broken leg.

His demise left the the stage clear for Padraig Harrington to mop up the remaining titles at Royal Birkdale and Oakland Hills.

It was a disappointing Major season for Ernie Els and leading PGA Tour Money Winner and Fedex Cup champion Vijay Singh, neither of whom could muster more than a single major top-10.

The following table shows the Major – and not so-major – performances of the world’s leading golfers during 2008.
