Bite Derby shoes

My only complaint was the laces...which tended to stretch and didn't provide a secure knot and fit.

Bite Derby golf shoes
Bite Derby shoes in Aztec/white

Working mostly from home and spending much of my day anchored to a computer screen, there's not much need to be wearing outdoor shoes around the house. Besides, it's not 'the management's' preferred footwear indoors! Consequently my feet have become a little soft and sensitive.

An outing to the golf course - and especially a demanding one like Greetham Valley - becomes a little more of an ordeal, therefore, than for those who tend to wear sturdy walking shoes each day and maybe pull on a pair of football or cricket boots at weekends.

But it seems I'm not alone in a quest for comfy golf shoes and Bite are the latest manufacturers to concentrate on technical substance as well as style, providing shoes which make a round of golf more of a pleasure than route march.

Its orthotically-designed range of shoes for men and women with problem feet - whether through arthritis, overweight, gout, or skin problems - are making an impact and next year will introduce its Crowbar range allowing golfers to customise their shoes with three interchangeable insoles. OS1 will have an extra heel cushion, metatarsal pad and toe ridge; OS2 an extra supportive arch and deep heel cup while the Ortholiner (inserted under OS1 or OS2) completes a more snug fit for a narrow foot.

The Derby is the flagship shoe in the Bite performance range with its Y-Zone support system which I found extremely comfortable underfoot, combined with the ortholiner while providing good grip in the slippery conditions of late as early morning frost reduced even the slightest incline into a dangerous hazard for tired legs.

Apart from a few early blisters on the pressure points above my big toes - overcome by strategically-placed plasters for subsequent rounds - my only real complaint was the laces. While the brown nylon laces supplied with the shoes, matched the distinctive Aztec/white colour scheme, they tended to stretch and didn't provide a secure knot and fit. The result was that the shoes loosened during the round and demanded regular re-tying - more of an irritation than a permanent problem.

The Golfmagic Verdict
Rating: 8/10
Summary: Bite shoes have always been in the forefront of innovation in looks - check out their distinctive soft spike sandals - and now they are to be applauded for using new technology to add more comfort to our enjoyment of the game. .
