New Srixon Soft Feel ball

Srixon claims to have improved its Soft Feel ball. It's not much 'softer' but it flies higher.

Srixon 2-piece Soft Feel ball

Technology:Two-piece ball featuring a 328 dimple pattern to reduce drag and increase trajectory, a progressive inner core that gets softer towards the centre (more carry, closer shot dispersion) and a mark on the Rabalon HR+ cover to assist alignment. .

Srixon Soft Feel balls
Improved Soft Feel

The original Soft Feel ball from Srixon gained a reputation as one of the cheapest premium-branded balls on the market. Visit most golf stores and pro shops and ask for the cheapest ball in the shop with a name you'd recognise and chances are they'd hand over an emerald green sleeve of Srixon Soft Feel for under a fiver.

Nothing wrong with that, except that the ball wasn't soft ('as we know it, Jim') nor did it offer that much feel. But it was competitively priced, came from a well- known stable and was reasonably durable.

Srixon says it latest ball in their recent product line (following the Z-UR and Z-URS) is an improved version of the original and is made as a two-piece ball (core and cover) both of which are claimed to be of softer materials than the first of its type.

Though my short term memory isn't as good as it used to be, there's little difference between this latest ball and the original and it has a very similar performance to the aforementioned Srixon Z-UR with a similar 'click' at impact.

But as the packaging suggests, it's a definite higher-flier - the dimple pattern producing less spin but launching the ball on an angle which allows it to drop to earth with a plop rather than a skid.

For example, I hit a towering career 4-iron into the second green at my local course last week and the pitchmark was less than a foot short of its final resting place. Chipping's a little more lively than a premium-priced ball and off the putter face I got a little extra roll than I'd expected.

As for durability it's hard to fault if you want a ball to last a few rounds and can keep it straight.

And that's another thing - the ball has built in alignment marks to help you line-up putts and tee shots - always a useful and distinctive aid.

The Golfmagic Verdict
Rating: 7/10
Summary: The word 'soft' in its title is slightly ambiguous but it's a ball for slower swing speeds and will give you a little extra height to make up for its lack of spin. Pretty good value and a good winter ball. .

Srixon Soft Feel's are great balls, a tad firmer than a Pro V1, but easily as durable and as long off the tee.

Cheers DC, that worked , not seen them before will definitely give them a try, I used to use Topflite complete soft and got them for £9 at Tesco but the buggers sold out, can only get them for about £15 on tinternet with postage and I ain't paying £6 more for the same bloody ball,
( cheapskate ) I know, well I only lose em anyway so just making my losses cheaper.
Posted: 15/09/2006 22:32

Sham, I brought Srixon AD333 from american golf for only £14 per doz, £1 cheaper than the Soft feel.
Posted: 15/09/2006 23:03

Sham srixon Z urs are awesome and every bit as good as a titleist pro v1/V1x but mark-cut up quickly, but I found the AD333's a bit hard like a pinnacle IMHO.

The z-ur are awesome but there is no way I can afford to play with them, I used 3 in a round without losing, all are cut.
Posted: 16/09/2006 07:23

Soft Feel are just too soft and don't zip thru the air, IMO. Like teeing off with a lump of soap. So poor, that I chuck em straight in my practice bag if I find one, and I am no ball snob. However, the Ad333s are great - a good all-rounder for spin, distance and putting feel and are my current ball of choice.
Posted: 16/09/2006 07:35

Sham, I use the AD333 and buy in bulk from Snaintnon Golf. Works out at £10 a dozen. Email me your address and I will send you a sleeve to try out.
I need to order some more soon so if you like them you can have a dozen or two at at that price.
Posted: 16/09/2006 08:32

That's a great price TB. I thought £15 for a doz was good. How many do you have to buy to get that price?
Posted: 16/09/2006 08:49

Yeh,how many?
Posted: 16/09/2006 09:42

Sham if you are looking for some soft golf balls going cheap I have got a couple of boxes of Maxfli Noodle Rotini surplus to requirements plus another few around* willing to let go for £8.50 per dozen plus postage.

*if interested I will dig them out and let you know exactly how many I have and no doubt I can come up with a few used for a couple of rounds to chuck in with them.
Posted: 16/09/2006 09:55

TW and BN six dozen for £60. They have a sliding scale so 3 dozen is £36. Still quite cheap as they don't charge postage either....or at least haven't the last two orders...

Thanks guys for all the info and offers, I still haven't hit my Srixon soft yet as I didn't want to use them on the builders yard of a course where we stayed (see my post's on the Shambles Club) and the only proper course I played I didn't want to experiment as I had a much stiffer challenge from the course and opponent , but I will try them out next week and get back to you. :O)
Posted: 24/09/2006 13:31

Sham, where did you play in the end?
Posted: 24/09/2006 14:50

True Blue, I played at Treloy 1 mile outside of Newquay , I played there last year but wasn't too Impressed by it as the fairways were full of grass cuttings and I gained a full 1 inch in height after 2 holes, the greens were a bit rough with bare patches, But, this new Pro and green staff have totally transformed it IMHO and it was great this year, the greens are like velvet and uniformly cut and with the pin placements were a real challenge, they used the contours of the greens to good effect, good job my putter was hot as I took 15 on the first 9 sadly a 23 on the second 9 , the fairways though hard because of lack of rain were in good nick and no damn cuttings to clog your spikes.

I only played 3 times all week as my grandson (14 months ) was on top form and demanded attention , the other 2 9 hole rounds were at Atlantic Reach Golfing Complex ( ROTFLMAO ) nr. Indian Queens and was like playing in a brickyard , totally crap , the worst course I have ever been on, and I have been on a few bad ones.

I have converted another golfer to the CHIPPER after using it to get out of shallow bunkers and hitting the pin four times , I would highly recommend Treloy as its not too hilly but although a short course 2196 yds off the whites par 32 it was a good tester for me with tricky greens.

Glad you enjoyed it Sham. PM me your address and I will get a sleeve of AD333 off to you to try out.
Posted: 24/09/2006 17:49

Well I tried my Srixon soft and found them a little hard for my driver, but they were great for my Irons and wedges and they felt good off the putter, I didn't manage to cut a single one and they stood up well.

downside , I lost 4 but all was not lost, a friendly green keeper gave me 7 balls he had found, 2 callaways and one titleist and a couple of lesser balls so it came out even :O)

Thanks True Blue balls arrived this morning, will report back.
Posted: 27/09/2006 14:48

True Blue, GREAT, what a ball, I absolutely love em they don't cut or scuff and feel great off my driver, I used the same ball for 16 holes and not a mark, stupidly went for the green at extreme range and hit the water ditch 5ft short of the green, bugger, lost the ball under the mud and Lillie's, double bugger.

Till that mishap I had hit the fairway every time with the driver, the last two holes with my srixon soft I found the rough both times, was it the ball or me?
also got a good roll off the putter and my distance control was spot on, 15 putts on the front 9 and 17 on the back 9.

If the offer is still on could I order two dozen, balls not boxes:O)
Posted: 10/10/2006 20:40

Bl**dy hell Sham, I ordered last week! You need to be a little quicker off the mark.
Currently got 3 dozen so won't be ordering any more for until next year....fingers crossed!
I seem to recall Ballsy Northerner being interested maybe you could get together with him to order some?!?
Posted: 11/10/2006 23:03

Not to worry mate, I didn't get to try them till late tuesday and posted as soon as I could, Its the wifes fault for having so many bloody appointments, I will find some somewhere and until then I have two left, do you think they will last me. :O)

Thanks for the three and for telling me about them, cheers mate,
Posted: 11/10/2006 23:28

Sham, as I said I have 3 dozen so can let you have a dozen for a tenner. When we meet up we can exchange.
Posted: 12/10/2006 09:19

Thought you said you couldn't make it :O)

Yes ,I will be forever in your debt. (till I pay you) :O)
Posted: 12/10/2006 09:28

I cant this weekend...but surely we will meet soon?!?!?!
Posted: 12/10/2006 11:46

Well it won't be for the want of trying ?err, that doesn't look right in print but you know what I mean, I hope.:O)
Posted: 12/10/2006 11:54

True Blue, Played 18 with the same ball and it still looks like new, not a mark or scuff, great balls, still got two left :O)
Posted: 15/10/2006 00:16

Told Ya, Told Ya, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah
Posted: 15/10/2006 08:57

I have played with the Nike before and they are a bit hard, for winter golf I myself use Titleist NXT Tour which are a great all round ball.
If you have a slower swing I would try either the Maxfli Noodle or Titleist SoLo.
Also all the Srixons are briliant, alot of my friends have started to play with them rather than the ProV1......!!!!
