White Steel 2-ball – balanced with feel

When Odyssey first introduced its 2-ball putters and secured a debut win for Paul Lawrie in the Dunhill Links of 2001, the club revolutionised this ‘game within a game.’

Since then the company has worked hard to improve the technology of the 2-ball in its balance, weight distribution and feel.

The result is the White Steel range – available now both as a 2-ball and traditional, heel-toe weighted blade .

The most significent change is in the feel. While previous models’ plain white urethane insert perhaps suited the pros on fast greens and amateurs who used firmer composition balls, for me it didn’t work so well on slower-paced UK greens, demanding too much of a hit.

However, Odyssey seem to have found a compromise by integrating a precision-milled, stainless steel insert into the centre of the original face material, about the size of a small chunk of chocolate - and the feel is delicious.

The result is a clubface that makes those longer approach putts so much easier to judge. I’ve missed too many five footers to make me a complete convert but my three-putting has reduced dramatically in the half a dozen rounds I’ve used it.

I love too, the better balance, which makes the stroke so much smoother, while the distinctive red, soft-polymer Winn grip suddenly moulds the handle in to your palms and fingertips. Golfmagic reviewer Roland Olliff was also impressed by its performance and says ‘with winter coming it will come into it's own.’

The Golfmagic Verdict
Rating: 8.5/10
Summary: At a touch under £150 for the 2-ball version, it might be too extravagant a price for some, but it’s a better long-term investment than a mid-range driver and has a better chance of reducing your scores.
