Ping G2 driver (460cc)

'One hit and golf for chef Nick tasted sweet again – he had found the recipe for success.'

Ping G2 driver

Price: £249

Nick Briers is a chef, a nine-handicapper golfer, with a short but powerful swing. He had invested in a Ping i3 driver, but was becoming increasingly disillusioned with it.

The ball flight, the feel, the penetration had left him. He was having to make do and it was hurting his golf. He liked the look of this driver but it wasn’t working for him.

Fortunately we bumped into each other on one of my club-testing days and he was able to try out the latest big bomber from Ping – the G2 with a giant 460cc head and already successful in the hands of Karen Stupples - the Weetabix British Women’s Open champion.

One hit and golf for Nick tasted sweet again – he had found the recipe for success.

Everything about the G2 suited him – the feel was so forgiving; he felt he was squeezing the ball off the clubface with hardly a tremor of vibration.

This was most likely due to the new TFC 100D graphite shaft, available in three flexes – regular (R), stiff (S) and extra stiff (X) - designed with a dampening material to reduce vibration. Ping also offers the Aldila NV 65 and Grafalloy ProLaunch 65 shaft - for golfers seeking different ball flight characteristics.

Nick also liked the long, high draw flight he achieved with this 10-degree G2. A plasma-welded, variable thickness face takes the credit for this, developing a lower spin rate and higher launch angle.

But with slightly different swings, though similar handicaps, we didn’t generate the same performance, or the same enthusiasm for the G2. The test club was more suited to Nick’s steep angle of attack in the downswing, while I struggled with my punchy style to get the ball airborne as successfully.

I felt a visit to Ping’s new custom -fitting centre at Gainsborough would prove more beneficial to me than to Nick to find the right implement.

As we parted Nick was heading for his nearest computer, to check out Ping’s WebFit programme, confident he’d found in the G2 all the right ingredients.

Verdict

The Ping G2 has terrific feel off the clubface – and will even perform off the deck – but we recommend you check out the Webfit and preferably get professionally fitted before parting with your cash.

No, no, no! Stop this now! I'm fed up fighting with myself. I don't need new golf clubs, I'm fine with what I have. My i3 driver does the job. And then you publish this sort of nonsense. Oooooh, this might be better than the i3, maybe ....no....yes....no...aaaaargh....

To play decent golf, you need a decent putter, good irons and a great driver. I've been searching for the perfect driver for the last 20 years. I think my search has come to an end. I discovered the PING G2 10* in R-flex stock shaft.
It has a good solid sound, like a 975D Titleist, but better. The head is big and square. It 's very light and I can generate some good clubhead speed. The ball comes off the face rather quickly and launches to a medium height , staying in the air for some serious hang time. The flight is dead straight, and hits the ground running. WOW!!!!

Did you buy one in the end Alan?

Posted: 08/06/2005 18:21

No I don't think he did!
Posted: 08/06/2005 18:29

Why not?

Posted: 08/06/2005 18:30

A number of reasons -

I can't bring myself to spend over £100 on a single club - it just feels wrong, and the number of times I play and standard I play it doesn't warrant the spend.

I'm still not convinced I can hit a jumbo headed driver - they feel clumsy.

I can get one for under £100 on eBay when the G3 comes out.

Is this the new definition of hitting the G spot.

F.a.o. Mcalan,
I got myself the Ram 450 ti, seen it on golfonline for £53.90, wnet to directgolf who are selling it for £59.99 and they said they would give me it for £50. As directgolf had more options I got the degree and the flex I was looking for.
This was my first Jumbo headed driver and at that price I felt I could'nt go wrong, as it also got best driver under £150 in "todays golfer"

One of my playing partners plays with a Ram 450 ti and spanks the ball 250 yards minimum and straight.

Might be worth having a look at.

just bought the G2 3 Wood , heaven.....
Posted: 19/07/2005 18:25

Just had the same problem. Bought a Cobra 400SZ about 1 year ago and man thats a good driver - handicapp went from 16 to 12 last year but struggled with the driver this year - borrowed a G2 from a local pro and one hit - i had to have one!!!

Sold the cobra on ebay and bought a G2 8.5 degree driver with stiff graphalloy shaft at the weekend and man does it fly - and it has at least 20 yards more run on the ball when it hits the ground!!!

YOU KNOW YOU WANT ONE!!!!!
Posted: 19/07/2005 20:36

I want one and I doubt I could hit it straight at all :)
