The driver market has been saturated in recent years with different shapes, sizes, colours and brands, each more fabulous than the last. In an era where the sensational and excessive, seems to have become the norm, how refreshing to discover a club that is unashamedly simple and resolutely functional.

Thank heavens for the Srixon WR driver.

But calling a driver simple is something of a misnomer. There is no such thing anymore, so complex is the technology that goes in to producing a club capable of propelling a golf ball into the stratosphere at high speed.

Important as distance has become, Srixon also acknowledges the need for accuracy, and it is this that is at the heart of the WR.

STRAIGHT might well be the new LONG.

Unlike the Srixon XX10, where all the available technology is geared towards gaining extra yards, the Srixon WR’s internal workings all centre around stability, forgiveness and optimisation. To help achieve this, plenty of work has been done on the face, ensuring that the bulge and roll help counteract mishits and minimise spin.

The sweetspot has actually been increased by making the walls of the clubhead thinner. The net result is a more forgiving face that will still deliver yardage, even when the ball doesn’t come off 'the middle of the bat.' And when you’re standing over the ball not entirely sure of where it’s going to end up, that is a comforting thought.

Placing two three-gram weights in the rear of the head also helps bring down the spin rate and improves the launch angle for straighter, longer drives. Cleverly, the WR designers also made use of a thick rib in the rear of the club that moves the centre of gravity (COG) lower and deeper as the loft models increase. With each loft optimised, golfers have the very best chance to find the fairway.

If you like the traditional look, the WR will certainly appeal. It sits beautifully behind the ball, and there is absolutely nothing to distract the eye. The sole and face is a little angular but it’s all done in a way that whispers rather than shouts. If you are the sort of player who thinks that the marathon of golf is best won by the tortoise rather than the hare, this could be the perfect club for you.

The Golfmagic Verdict
Rating: 8/10
Summary:Another triumph for Srixon, proving that this Japanese company does straight as well as it does long. This is a seriously good club that is as consistent and as accurate as anything on the market.
