Eighteen-year-old student Richard Boothroyd (pictured top right) was a worthy of the Golf Buddy hand held GPS we offered for the best product reviews submitted to Golfmagic.com during February.
Richard, from Meltham in Yorkshire and a 20-handicap member at Marsden Golf club, near Huddersfield, submitted as handful of reviews about the clubs he carries in his every-changing bag of equipment offering detailed opinion on how they performed.
His prize is one of the latest Golf Buddy electronic distance rangefinders worth over £300 and packed with features including automatic course and hole recognition, shot distance measurement, score-tracking for 1,000 rounds, customised target setting and the ability to store up to 20,000 courses in the memory.
Said Richard: I'm an equipment addict and pounce at the opportunity of trying any new or eye-catching equipment. I have swapped four or five different drivers in the l;ast two years and am still as yet to find the perfect formula."
He describes himself as an an avid golfer at a club situated in the Pennine hills above Huddersfield, on the edge of the Peak District National Park and one of the most picturesque in Yorkshire with spectacular views
"It was designed in 1920 by Dr Alister MacKenzie, who also helped create Augusta National. It's a well-maintained 9-hole course with some tight fairways, tricky approach shots and guarded greens. It's natural hazards and openness to the prevailing winds add its enjoyment - even in the Marsden mizzle (Moorland drizzle).
Richard describes his
TaylorMade r7 irons as 'the best-looking irons on the market' even though he did have issues with the steel shafts, which the manufacturers replaced after they showed signs of premature rust.
While he claimed the Adams Idea A2 OS hybrid was 'too chunky and bulky' for his taste, Richard was full of praise for the Benross V6 TriMass 3-wood (top performer for a budget club) and the Benross Innovator sand wedge (not sleek but it does the job).
As for the Odyssey Black Series i No.7 putter, Richard has he was impressed by the consistent roll it produced but said the headcover was 'terrible'.
'Why would they want to put a wool lining and which cakes with mud?'
