Latest Yonex Cyberstar CT driver

Aimed exclusively at the UK and European market, where it seems bragging rights for distance off the tee are perhaps more important than scores on the card for the new breed of amateur golfer, the CT could prove a strong challenger.

Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder just as performance depends on who’s swinging the club. A pal of mine who tried the CT, loved its flight, sound and distance compared to his ageing TaylorMade r580. For me it lacked that ‘Yes!’ factor.

While he was able to thump it on a high arc, making the most of the tungsten weight, fitted to deepen the centre of gravity and help square the face at impact, I was unable to produce the same consistency.

The fusion of carbon graphite and titanium in the crown of the clubhead, which Yonex engineers have worked hard to develop, certainly makes it lighter in feel and helps reposition the weight deeper. But for me the waft and waggle I like to feel at address as I hover the clubhead behind the ball, didn’t instill the confidence I’m used to.

My playing companion loved the flight and penetration the 10.5 degrees of loft gave him, compared to the nine degrees of his normal driver, while over two rounds and a session on the range, I struggled to control the accuracy of a low left-right slider.

It could be down to the low elasticity LE60+ graphite shaft which didn’t suit my handsy style of swing but more likely my confidence waned and I felt this driver just wasn’t for me.

The Golfmagic Verdict
Rating: 8/10
Summary:Satisfaction in a driver is being able to thump out those high flying draws consistently, instill confidence and make fairways and greens more attainable. Protected by its stylish and easy-fit headcover, Yonex has introduced a club specifically for those European golfers who need the added incentive of distance to spice up their game. I prefer to sacrifice length to keep a few more sixes off my card.
