'Why ball position's so crucial'

Justin Rose reveals that simplicity is the key to better golf.

Rose checks ball position on the first tee at Wentworth

Justin Rose’s approach to golf is epitomised by his thoughts on ball position in his stance. It relies on simplicity.

"The higher you need to hit it, the further forward it needs to be in your stance – and that works from driver to wedge," says Rose.

"Generally I don’t think amateurs have the ball for their long irons, forward enough in their stance," he says.

"They have it towards the middle and then hit behind it or thin it. The ball should be two or three inches behind left heel. You need to imagine you are sweeping it so that at impact the full loft of the club is presented to the ball."

"If the ball is too far back there’s not enough loft or you’ll try and help it up in the air," Rose (25), already with a handful of European Tour titles to his name.

"Generally the same rule applies to the driver. You can’t get the ball far enough forward in your stance. Nobody is going to have it outside their left heel as it’s too uncomfortable. So get it as forward as you can by your left heel."

"It’s amazing how much more time it feels like you get into the ball. Obviously it’s only a split second but it allows you to release the club head."

Bunker shots should also be played with the ball in the same position Rose says. "I heard Tiger say his bunker play improved when he put the ball a little further forward. It gives you a bit more time and presents the full loft of the club to the ball."

Rose added that it’s important to experiment with your stance and how open you can stand to the ball to vary the height you want the ball to travel.

I play off 14, but I do seem to hit the ground first on my Iron shots. Justin suggests I place the ball just behind my left heel. I would then tend to hit the ground more!! Has anyone any tips for me. Thanks Keith

I'm the same, I have found that putting the ball back just in front of my right heel works fine - give it a go.

My club pro has recently got me to place the ball back in my stance for shots out of long grass and downhill and its works very well for me. If I place the ball forward in my stance I seem to thin the shot with irons every time. However if I sweep the ball would that stop me thinning the ball ?

I'm off 13, and if I put the ball forward for iron shots (indeed for any shot other than with the driver)I'm guaranteed to thin it. Why do all other teaching pros advise the ball in the middle for iron shots? Isn't it a matter of what works for you is the right way?

The key to hitting balls crisply without hitting it fat, is the weight shift forward during the downswing and HIT IT DOWN. A lot of people try to lift the ball up with their arms instead of letting the club head do its job and hit the ground first.

Thanks Gentlemen
I spoke to my club pro yesterday without sight of Henry's answer and he says it's all about the follow through. I am hdcp 23 and he says I still have a problem with my lack of correct follow through so a middle of stance ball position is a bad way of compensating. So Henry you are right as the weight shift is part of a good follow through I suppose. Get that right and then position the ball forward to gain distance and good shape, or that's what the pro said.

I have been "advised" "told" "instructed" etc etc by all my golfing friends to hit my mid irons from the middle of my stance to get more distance but when I do, the ball fades so now when no one is looking I put the ball just inside my heel and hit it straight as an arrow with no problems at all and just as far!!!

I play middle for wedges, 1- 1 1/2 further forward for short items, another inch for mid irons, driver off the inside of my left heel.......

Thats what I had been told and read/ watched seen etc

Advice from the pros to amateurs is quite often pretty useless. The pros live in a world where everyone has a near classic swing, and they practice every day. Just picking one element of what amateurs do and criticising it is silly. It's amazing how often you see this. Sure, if you're Justin Rose, and you put it too far back, it won't be as good. But if you're Joe Bloggs, you need to make your swing 100 times more efficient and reliable before Justin's advice can mean anything to you.

It's like a sparrow getting advice on how to soar from an eagle. "Just do like I do." Fat chance. Justin's talented and he practises all the time and has done for years and years. It's a feature of every golfer's denial that they believe the pros have some secret that they can whisper and you'll be as good as them. The fact of the matter is, the secret is this: "Start 15 years ago and have lessons every week, and practice every day." After that, Justin's advice might be worth something to you.

I couldn't agree more with what you say Joseph. I used to play squash every day and was top of the Civil Service ladder in the middle east for a long time but when i returned to the UK I couldn't find a squash court to play in where i was living in Scotland so took up golf. I had a shed load of lessons, spent a fortune on them and listened to all and sundry, read books and tried as hard as I could all to very little avail. I don't have a natural swing, neither do I have the mental calmness to play the game as well as I would like however, as long as I wake up in the morning and can stagger out to the first tee and get round in a gross 80/90 I am quite happy. No more lessons and i don't listen to all the experts I play my own game, use my handicap and take their money!!

Put the ball depending how i want to hit it really.

Fade - Right up by my left foot
Draw- way back there in the stance
Straight - Havent worked that one out yet

It really depends on what feels natural since the emergence of Mr Woods there seems to be a real teaching method of you WILL do it this way!! What happened to feel and just going with the flow.......... ah thats probably why im stranded on 11.4 handicap!!!

Quite right too Mark.

Ball position is relative to which side of your body is the most dominant.
And as said before weight shift.

Most club golfers hit with their back arm/ shoulder which leads to a ball position from centre to back foot

OK, I surrender and will try the ball forward tomorrow morning (Friday)and throw myself into a solid weight transfer. If that doesn't work I'll go back to the comfort zone on Saturday. If only this game of ours were straightforward!!

I have improved considerably since positioning the ball more forward in my stance. I used to play nearly every iron out the centre which felt comfortable to me. I studied the Swing Like a Pro stuff. Have a look at the demo screen saver for ideal ball position with driver, 2,5 and 9 irons. http://www.modelgolf.com/

Hitting fat has nothing to do with the follow through. The follow through is the result of coiled power.Fat shots are caused by your spine angle changing which can be for several reasons

A good drill that my pro has taught me is the follow.

Take a 7 iron, place the ball above the leading foot's big toe. However address the ball as if it is in the middle of the stance. Swing and hit the ball that is positioned over the big toe. Repeat 5 or 6 times, you should be able to hit the ball like normally (ball may fly a bit higher however but shouldn't slice or hook any more than normal). After the 5-6 repetition put it back to where is feels comfortable and swing.

NB: Make sure you are swinging through and not introducing a forward press into your swing to hit the ball.

This drill MAKES you hit through the striking area, if you don't you will not hit the ball over the big toe. You will be hitting crisp shots in no time. Also remember hitting balls off of range mats isn't like grass as range mats allow the club to bounce.

Hope this helps.

Not sure that I believe in there being an idealised ball position, it depends on ones own unique swing. I think the key is to experiment with ball position on the practise ground and ascertain what works best for you.
I hit the ball a lot better with irons when its closer to my left foot as Justin Rose suggests BUT I hit it far too high, silly high, so take it closer to the middle of my stance as a compromise between consustency and ball flight.

A great thread.

Faldo suggests in his video that amateurs with RH dominant armsy swings (similar to Exmax's point above )would be better positioning the ball back of centre, to make good contact.

My Pro is trying to make me strike the ball towards the centre but I am too often thinning everything from 8i down and the ball flight is too high with a big loss of distance. Its driving me mad and still not sorted it out consistenly yet.

I know its weight transference and club lag but I may never have a good enough swing to achieve this :(

Tell you what - the recent rather soft fairways showed me that I was striking the ground with the heel of my irons, so I hadn't a chance of finding the sweet spot. I have had the lie of them all checked and adjusted, needing between 2 and 4 degrees of change, and it's done far more for me than mucking about with a few inches of ball placement!
Posted: 25/01/2006 15:33

Have experimented with different ball positions and ended up cluttering up the brain cells. Now, I only position the ball in the one position i.e. just behind the left heel (right-hander). Only then do I adjust the width of my stance with the right foot, narrowing the stance the shorter the iron to be used. For me, the shorter the iron, the more the ball seems to move back in the stance and this is because the head is moving slightly forward as the stance narrows. Now as I approach the ball my mind is not cluttered up thinking about ball position and very slowly this is helping my club/ball contact for all irons.
Posted: 25/01/2006 18:45

Bloody hell,I agree with Creosote for a change:) The ball position is individual to you and depends on mnay things.I have never ever thought about.I have thought about posture more than sex,so this kind of dominates my swing, the ball position is dictated to by the length of the club and how comfortabke it feels. My ball position has just happened.
Posted: 25/01/2006 19:34

Could you tell me if standing too far from the ball could cause me to pull shots?I hit my driver straight 9/10 times but the irons seem too pull far to easy and im not doing anything different in the swing....How far from the ball should i be when taking an iron shot?
