'BIG BIG BIG'
Strengths:
Fabulous quality.
Rewards a consistent style and ability. Perfect ball roll.
See weaknesses!
Weaknesses:
Lack of feel/feedback.
Needs a very specific style of putting.
Not for those who seek anonymity (could equally be strength!)
Everyone will want a go (could equally be strength!)
Overall:
This is a putter well out of the mainstream. It’s sheer physical size sets it apart. Interestingly it is not heavy; the head (at 245g) is some 20g lighter than it’s dimensionally smaller Ping sisters the Ug-Le and Cra-Ze, and exactly the same weight as the spindly Rossa Monza Corza. This is thanks to the Udrainium alloy (evidently a sense of humour is a pre-requisite to work in Ping’s putter department!) and the entire enormous head is a single piece of this Youreavinalaughium alloy.
My putter is the 12.5 “baby” of the family. Which means it’s 12.5cm wide across the face; there is 15cm big brother and 17.5cm big mutha also. The sectional size of the alloy is wide and deep.
What it does give is a huge inertia. This putter rewards only the classic putting style: arms and shoulders locked in a triangle, you just acting as the pivot on which this pendulum swings. For those who like to flick from the wrists or play the elbow-shuffle, this putter won’t suit. Once put into motion, it punishes any attempt to “finesse” the stroke with wrists, elbows or hands.
What it does give is most fantastic roll I’ve ever experienced from the many putters I’ve tried. The ball departs with a mission-like purpose, perfect roll, no skip, even on long putts where you really strike the ball. The ball runs on a perfectly straight line and I’d give it a no-reservations 10/10 on accuracy.
Downside is the lack of feedback (but is it really useful?) and my experience is that the particular “pendulum” style is more difficult to control distance. Oddly, on really long and on sub 1 metre putts I find distance control easy – it’s those 5-6 metre putts that I have issues with this putter. But that is all about consistency of swing and the putter is forcing me to become more consistent.
Quality of materials/construction is top-notch. The head is nickel-plated for a lovely finish. The sole has a “waffle” finish (doesn’t do it justice – it’s really nice) and is gracefully curved. Truetemper shaft, Winn grip, top quality headcover (lined inside!) – this is a quality product from top to bottom. The lime-green trim on the headcover and grip may be a bit loud for some, but this isn’t a putter for those who seek anonymity on the putting green – just those who seek a top-class product that will reward (even coach you towards) a better putting technique.
