It's rare these days to pick up a driver that doesn't come with any nuts, bolts, nooks or crannies. But if it offers you a true ball flight, who cares? Right?

The Mizuno MP-650 driver might be aimed at the better player but it's an extremely no-nonsense club.

Mizuno claims its forged 6-4 Ti face produces the fastest ball speeds it's ever created. And it's easy to see why.

Its classic clean looks and traditional pear-shaped head design inspires confidence at address, while its innovative five layer CORTECH design generates maximum ball speed and control.

The MP-650 utilises a 12g weight located low and deep in the face to produce medium launch and lower spin for maximum distance.

This Tour-ready 450cc driver sets up just open of square at address which makes the toe heavier and helps to create my desired fade.

Mizuno adds that better players tend to prefer the MP-650 because weight is moved to the outside of the head and presents the club with a more rounded appearance from above.

While Mizuno has attempted to combat the fade with a 6g in the heel of the club, I found it was almost impossible to create a draw. Straight or fade. Take your pick.

The heads on the MP-650 driver are also from the same production line as those in the Mizuno European Tour Workshop, which Golfmagic recently experienced at Burhill Golf Club.

The MP-650 is available in 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 12-degree, standard Fujikura Orochi Red shaftn, and in R, S or X-Stiff flex.

VERDICT

The Mizuno MP-650 is designed to combine high ball speeds, a medium-to-high launch and low spin rates.

A perfect club for those looking for control and wanting to take the left side of the course out of play.
