Harrington's Ryder Cup worry

Irishman concerned by precarious position

Harrington: 17th

Padraig Harrington has made Colin Montgomerie’s Ryder Cup wildcard decision just that little bit harder by declaring he’d be “devastated” if he missed out on spot.

The three-time Major champion has just five weeks to make up ground in the points race, after a missed cut at the Open Championship left him in the “very perilous position” of 17th in the table.

But the race for Celtic Manor is so tight, Harrington could rocket up to sixth should he win the Irish Open this weekend.

“I’ve had more top tens in the last year than I’ve ever had in my career so my form has been solid,” said the 38-year-old.

“Going on a guideline that most people use I’ve actually had my best year.”

Nine players qualify automatically at the end of next month and then captain Colin Montgomerie will add three more wild cards.

Unbelievably, five players in the world’s current top 25 – Paul Casey, Edoardo Molinari, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Harrington – are in need of a wildcard as things stand.

Rose has won twice in the US recently, Casey and Stenson were joint third at The Open and Molinari lifted the Scottish Open three weeks ago - and won the World Cup with his brother Francesco last November.

Harrington’s last victory was the US PGA two years ago.

“I was asked the other day if I got selected would I actually pull out,” Harrington stated.

“The inference was ‘would you pull out because you’re not playing well?’

“I haven’t won recently and that’s certainly below my expectations and everybody else’s expectations, but my form has actually been solid enough.

“I just have to wait and let it happen. I do try to be very disciplined in doing my own thing and not be influenced by outside factors - but clearly that one got to me.”

New vice-captain Darren Clarke admits he can’t imagine Harrington will miss out. “Personally I can’t envisage that situation, but I’m not the captain!” he said.

“We all know how good a player Padraig is - it would be very difficult to see Padraig not being on that team in Wales.

“It would be good to see him play really well and qualify and give Monty the extra choice of another pick.

“I think we would all like to see him qualify and we hope he does.”

Harrington is giving his mind a treat here, surely? Sure, he had a few top 10's earlier in the season, and a shed load in the latter part of last year. But recently... US Open, The Open... he was p*sh, no?

He hasn't won anything (besides his annual walkover at the Irish PGA) since the last Ryder Cup, has he?

On the one hand, Like Dazzer I can't see him missing out just because he's a multi-Major winner.

On the other, if I was Monty and had to choose between (say) him and Sergio for the last place, and I looked at their respective RC records...

I would still pick Harrington over Sergio. But over Rose, or Donald, or Stenson? Not so sure on current form. He needs a decent showing and he needs it soon. Of course, if he's in the form he says he's in, then it's merely a formality.

Another thing to focus on is partnerships. Ian Poulter has come out and said he's desperate to play with Justin Rose again, and relationships like that are vital to the Ryder Cup.

Totally agree AP. Partnerships are a HUGE factor in picking a team, or should be IMO.

It has started me wondering who Westy might be partnered with now? He and Clarke were brilliant together. I have no problem with Harrington being in the team if he is on form but to cut someone like Stenson (I have a soft spot for the swede ) out of the team would not seem right.

BTW, who counts their success by number of top tens?

Losers, that's who.

You want people used to winning. That's one reason that a smaller European Tour with a core of players accustomed to dominating it has been able to compete so well against a larger US Tour where a few top-tens made you a millionaire and let you coast through.

The best training for matchplay (IMO) is weightlifting. Of trophies.

I'm a big Paddy fan but being given the RC elbow could be the best kick up the @$$ he needs.Team chemistry and pride is more important. It's usually those most hungry to kick Yankee butt who win their matches, as they rise to the occasion. Paddy has made comments like Woods before him, that the RC is not that important to him.

Justin Rose has to be in, one way or another - 2 US Tour wins and another he should have won, it's amazing he isn't further up on the World Points list (too many points for being placed, perhaps, instead of winning?). Agree that he and Poults are a great pairing.

I think Westy can play with anyone - he has a good, steady game for 4somes, and seems to get on well with his peers.

Donald is another who has to play even if not in automatically (I think he is holding down the final spot).

I'm assuming the likes of Dyson and McGowan will fade as the race nears its conclusion, so still scope for Rose, Harrington & Stenson to force their way in.
