English duo Matt McGuire and Craig Swinburn were crowned PGAs of Europe champions as the stunning new Lumine Golf Club in Spain hosted its first major tournament.
With more than 18 European nations teeing up at the Greg Norman-designed Lakes course just south of Barcelona in Costa Dorada, McGuire and Swinburn emerged victorious at the prestigious PGAs of Europe Fourball Championship following two days of hotly-contested action.
And it wasn’t just their golf that impressed.
“Playing a tournament like this in such good conditions a couple of months before the season starts is great preparation,” said Swinburn. “The course was in brilliant condition and the hospitality superb.”
Lumine GC, with its 45-hole facility, has already agreed to host the 2013 event and has signalled its intentions to double the size of the field from 60 pairs to 120, in order to also incorporate the resort’s challenging Hills Course into the tournament.
“The event was a great success and we want to build on it and our relationship with PGAs of Europe to help promote the region as a golfing destination,” said Lumine Golf Club’s general manager Calle Carlsson. “We’re blessed with two very different but challenging courses and we’d like competitors to experience them both.”
