Austrian golf - spectacular

There has been much discussion among golfers – many of them on the golfmagic forum – about popular, recommended destinations, including France, Spain, Portugal and even Belgium.

One country that rarely gets a mention is Austria – home to 126 courses, most of which are spectacular with a mountain backdrop.

Longshot Golf’s senior product manager Sean Noble says this Alpine region has ‘great golf courses, breathtaking scenery, first class cuisine and a perfect climate for golf from May to mid-October.’ You can even combine golf and ski-ing.

Average temperatures, during the summer season range from 16 degree C. to 25C temperatures of 16-25 °C between May and October, with short flights to Salzburg from Birmingham, Southampton and Stansted, tee time availability and moderate green fees.

The Zell am See and Kaprun area is only an hour’s drive from Salzburg and is home to the Kitzsteinhorn and Schmittenhöhe courses named after towering peaks in the distance. Here you can ski on the glacier in the morning and play 18 holes before the sun goes down.

Kitzbühel, which hosts the legendary Hahnenkamm ski races, also has three excellent courses - Eichenheim, Schwarzsee and Wilder Kaiser.

Prices with Longshot, including flights, range from £309 per person. Further details on www.longshotgolf.com or call 0870 609 0995.

Pyramids golf.

Hilton Worldwide Resorts is currently promoting 16 golf resorts in exotic locations including the Hilton Pyramids Golf Resort at Giza in Egypt and the Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa in Thailand.

Hilton guests have a choice of 133 golf courses – all within 30 minutes drive from their resorts.

New resorts to open in the next two years include Bali, Dubrovnik, Philippines, Barbados, Phuket, Fiji, Venice, France, Seychelles, Miami and New Mexico.

Mountain golf at Humber Valley.

Barwell Leisure, perhaps best known for its exclusive golf and tennis holidays at La Manga in Southern Spain, is launching a direct service from the Gatwick to the new Canadian resort of Humber Valley, West Newfoundland on March 25.

A range of packages are planned this summer extended next January into the ski season.

The resort features lakeside and alpine lodges overlooking the spectacular Eagles Perch course and the Marble Mountain ski resort nearby.

With a flight time to Deer Lake airport with the Astraeus airline of under six hours, Humber Valley is probably North America’s most accessible resort from the UK.

Book Carnoustie online.

Carnoustie in Scotland is the first Open Championship venue to offer a free online booking service enabling golfers to use a credit card to book tee times up to six months in advance.

At www.carnoustiegolflinks.co.uk golfers can check availability on any particular day before securing a starting time through a simple, secure credit card transaction.

Says Graeme Duncan, Manager of the Carnoustie Golf Links: "It takes only a matter of minutes to make a booking and we will confirm it by return."

Carnoustie was recently announced as the venue for the 2007 Open Championship, the seventh it has staged. For further information call 01241 417015 (email: colin@carnoustiegolflinks.co.uk).

With Ireland gearing up for three major events within the next three years, the Emerald Isle has never been a better place to visit for a golfing holiday.

The Nissan Irish Open will be held this year at County Louth GC from July 22-25, the WGC American Express at Mount Juliet, Co.Kilkenny from September 30 to October 3 and the 36th Ryder Cup at the K Club, Co.Kildare from September 22-24, 2006.

There are also new course developments open at Doonbeg, Co.Clare (designed by Greg Norman), Heritage, Co Laois (Seve Ballesteros) and Seafield, Cio wexford (Peter McEvoy). Dromoland Castle is due to open in April next year.

I plan to take my (soon to be)16 year old son on a golf holiday this coming August. I'd like somewhere not too hot and not too expensive. Oh and not UK. Any suggestions (locations and/or courses)? Thanks, col

I cant comment personally on a venue abroad but from what I have heard and read Spain at this time of year is very good and not overly expensive. Malaga area- marbella.

Colin, there is an article on Golf in Southern Belgium in the archives of this site here's the link: -
<a HREF= "http://www.golfmagic.com/news/article/mps/UAN/3471/v/3/sp/"> Belgium

Without doubt a brilliant place for golf and I intend to go back this year for a few days. Look through the archives of 'courses and travel' for others.

You are right Alan.....It won't!!

Colin, there's some great golf to be had just the other side of the channel. Fantastic courses like Hardelot and Belle Dune and some hidden gems like Nampont St. Martin and Arras. Many of the less well known courses are usually very quiet, especially midweek and reasonably priced. I've spent many a happy day golfing on that part of France and can recommend it very highly.

Hi Colin,

Try browsing in the articles in the courses and travel section for some holiday ideas, Alan's article is: here, I'd agree, Belgium does seem to fit with your requirements on heat and cost for August.

Then if you look on the left there's a whole pod of links to specialist golfing holidays.

Colin,

Northern Belgium is worth a shout as well. Damme, Royal Zoute and Royal Ostend (De Haan) are all cracking courses.

Thanks for the suggestions. Belgium and/or France it will be. I think Spain will be too hot for me in August.

I would suggest the Costa Brava region of Spain, PGA Catalunya, Emporda and Pals are three top courses. You wont play any better courses in Spain and a fraction of the price of the Costa Del Sol.
I know just the place to stay a hotel call Plaja Park in Plaja D'Aro just outside Girona.

I am with Reloader on the Moray area of Scotland (although anywhere in Scotland will give you great golf) I have been there a number of times and the golf is great. I have never fancied overseas golf in preference to the home of golf. No need for handicap certificates, no language or currency problems and the best beer/whisky in the world (not that a 16 year old would be drinking)

Take him to Thailand. The golf courses are incredible - cheap and beautiful. Go down to the South-East near Pattaya and you will find twenty-plus amazing courses designed by the likes of Nicklaus, Faldo and Peter Thomson. Green fees can be ridiculously low if you join up with one of the local groups.

e.g. Century Ban Chang, Rayong

Nick Faldo designed Links-style course. On a Friday, two players sharing a cart with a caddy each costs around £15 in total (tips extra) for the full 18 holes. You won't have to book, show handicap cards or wait on the tee.

E-mail me if you want more details.

Neither Spain nor Tailand meets the criteria.

Dude says "not too hot"
Posted: 05/03/2004 07:46

August is a good time to play golf in northern France : generally good weather (a degree or two warmer than southern England) and most of the locals will be off to sunnier climes.

Some courses even have a semi low season in July and August due to lack of locals. Weird or what?

Also, some of the top private courses open up to visitors only in July and August. Not cheap at ~£60 a head, but Fontainebleau is one such course and well worth it.

There are many great courses between Paris and the channel coast. I'd have game with you but I'll be back in Britain in August.
