PING G400 driver review

Need To Know

Forgiving, long, great feel
Our score:
PRICE: £389.00 YEAR: from 2017

The PING G driver was an incredible piece of golf technology that took the market by storm in 2016 and was undoubtedly one of the best golf drivers of the year. It was known for its outstanding forgiveness, excellent distance, and lively feel that golfers couldn't get enough of. It was a favourite in the GolfMagic HQ, picking up numerous accolades including a gold award in our annual driver test. But now, PING has launched the new G400 driver, which builds on all these attributes and takes them to the next level.

Looks

At first glance, you may not notice many differences between the PING G and G400 drivers. However, upon closer inspection, you'll notice that the G400 has a slightly deeper appearance and a smaller head (445cc). But, the turbulators, DragonFly, and Vortec technology on the crown remain, which is great for those who loved the previous version. On the sole, the tungsten weight is hard to miss, and the new color scheme and shaft that changes color from copper to black is a fun addition. Overall, the G400 is a great-looking driver that inspires confidence behind the ball.

Sound and Feel

The PING G400 driver has a light, soft feel and produces a lively sound that golfers will appreciate. While the sound may be slightly louder than average, the internal rib structure enhances the acoustics of the clubhead, resulting in a more satisfying sound and feel at impact. The driver's superb feel is similar to that of the G driver but slightly smoother and more responsive.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the PING G400 driver is a cut above the rest. The driver boasts a very low center of gravity, which is made possible thanks to the tungsten weight in the sole. This leads to higher launch and lower spin, even on mishits, making it an incredibly forgiving driver that appeals to golfers of all skill levels. Additionally, the DragonFly technology has enabled PING to move weight around, resulting in even more forgiveness and improved ball speed.

In terms of distance, the PING G400 driver is a top performer. Golfers can expect to eke out a couple of extra yards on their well-struck shots, up to five yards on average. The driver also performs better into the wind compared to the PING G, making it an incredibly versatile club that can handle a variety of playing conditions. After tinkering with the set-up, we managed to get the driver spinning at around 2,200 rpms, which is exactly what we were looking for.

Verdict

The PING G400 driver is an incredibly well-rounded club that ticks all the boxes. It is more forgiving and longer than the PING G, making it one of the top-performing drivers in 2017. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced golfer, the G400 is a great choice for you. Overall, this driver is a must-try for golfers looking to take their game to the next level. With its sleek design, impressive performance, and excellent sound and feel, it's no wonder we expect it to fly off the shelves.
