Fleetwood withdraws from Scottish Open

Tommy Fleetwood has withdrawn from the Scottish Open and will take the time to rest and practice at home ahead of the Open next week.

The tournament at Gullane is often used by players as a warm up to the Open, allowing players to test themselves in similar conditions.

World number 10 Fleetwood is recovering from a virus he picked up at the French Open two weeks ago.

“I wanted to play the Scottish, because it’s a great tournament on a course I really like; my result there a few years back  actually took me to 47th in the world which was the highest I’d been at that point.,” Fleetwood told Telegraph Sport. “But I feel this is best for me.”

The 2016 Open champion Henrik Stenson has also pulled out with an elbow injury, and is unsure whether he will be able to tee it up at golf's oldest major. Fellow Swede Alex Noren has also pulled out of the event.

The field remains relatively strong, with American superstars Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed and Phil Mickelson making their way to the UK among others.
