Kisner leads the Open after 66 on day one

American Kevin Kisner carded an opening round 66, five under, to lead the 2018 Open at Carnoustie.

The 34-year-old counteracted a bogey on the fifth hole with an eagle on the par-five sixth and a birdie on the eighth.

Then, the two-time PGA Tour winner cashed in on placid morning conditions to fire three birdies on the back nine with no bogeys coming home.

Compatriot Tony Finau is one stroke back, while a trio of South Africans are at the top end of the leaderboard.

Erik Van Rooyen, Zander Lombard and Brandon Stone – winner of the Scottish Open last week - are within two strokes of Kisner.

Rory Mclroy is promisingly placed on -2, alongside England’s Danny Willet and Matthew Southgate.

Tiger Woods is still on the course at -1 through 14 holes.
