US Open champion Gary Woodland has revealed his golf coach Pete Cowen belives he has coronavirus, according to a text sent to Golfweek

"I've talked to Pete over the last couple of days and he's said he thinks he has the virus and has been in isolation feeling horrible," read Woodland's text.

"My thoughts and prayers are with him and everyone during this time. My family and I are at home feeling great trying to entertain their kids under three. We are healthy and have no symptoms."

Cowen, who played on the European Tour in the 1970s and early 1980s, is best known for his work as a golf coach.

The Englishman's past and present clients include reigning US Open champion Woodland, World No.1 and four-time major champion Rory McIlroy, former Open champions Henrik Stenson and Louis Oosthuizen, and former Masters winner Danny Willett.

Story updated following Cowen's interview with The Telegraph:

"You really don’t want this," Cowen, 69, told The Telegraph.

"I’m feeling horrendous and wouldn’t wish this on anyone; no matter how young and fit they may be.

"After a few days of self-isolation, we decided to ring the ambulance and the medics said I ticked every box on the corona sheet — low blood-oxygen levels, persistent dry cough, raging temperature, high heart rate.

"They were not allowed to test me unless I was admitted to hospital and then the staff there decided to keep you in.

"I urge everyone to do exactly what the authorities are saying. I’ve told all my players the same."
