A racehorse chucked its jockey on the deck before crashing into the railings and running onto the golf course ahead of the 430 at Yarmouth yesterday.

The dramatic footage, captured by At The Races, saw the horse - named Jean Valjean - bolt at the start of the race before sending jockey Sean Kirrane onto the deck. The colt then smashed its way through the railings of the racecourse and took a tour of the adjacent golf course...

The horse, priced up at 15/2 before the start of the race, was eventually caught and returned to his trainer Richard Spencer.

It was rightfully then declared a non-runner for the Class 6 Handicap.

Thankfully Kirrane escaped without any serious injury, only picking up cuts to his body.

"He is fine but he isn't in that he has cuts and hematomas," Spencer told Racing Post

Kirrane said: "He was wearing a visor for the first time and not all horses face them and he caught fright. He was not stopping and I had to bale out – that was better than going through the barriers. It's a shame as he had a little chance."

Clerk of the course Richard Aldous said: "The problem is we're a bit open on to the golf course and straight on to the beach and he went down towards Scratby, so my head groundsman and the girl with him in the truck and another lad were going for a run down the beach.

"I'm not sure whether he was caught by a member of the public but he's being walked back by the trainer and assistant trainer."

The race eventually went off 19 minutes late and caused a delay to the rest of the meeting.

Herringswell eventually won the race at 6/1.
