Golf returns as an Olympic sport in Rio following a 112-year absence, but its re-emergence hasn’t been able to lure some of the best players in the men's game.

MCILROY WITHDRAWS FROM OLYMPICS

The top four in the rankings – Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy – will be watching from the comfort of their sofas (or not, in McIlroy’s case), citing the Zika virus as the reason for the snub.

ROSE: I HOPE THEY REGRET NOT COMING

Conversely, the women’s game has embraced the event, with only one player deciding the Zika virus risk was one not worth taking.

Nonetheless, a throng of talent will be teeing it up this week, and three glistening medals will adorn player’s necks come Sunday.

Now’s the time to get clued up on the competition.

Dates

11-14 August (no 36-hole cut)

Teams

Statistically this is one of the easiest events to win, with only 60 players competing in the men and women’s event.

Players inside the top 15 in the rankings are eligable, with a maximum of four golfers from each nation, while those outside the top 15 are allowed two players, providing they do not have two or more players inside the top 15.7
