Viktor Hovland claimed his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Puerto Rico Open on Sunday, sinking a 25-foot putt for birdie on the final hole.

A par at the 18th would have sent Hovland into a playoff with Josh Teater, but he slammed in a lengthy putt to become the first Norwegian to win on the PGA Tour and two Norwegian commentators went absolutely mad.

Hovland, who is widely regarded as one of the brightest stars in the sport, could make his Ryder Cup debut this year at Whistling Straits when Padraig Harrington takes his European side to the States.

It looked as though Hovland had let his chance of victory slip when the 22-year-old needed five shots just to get on the green at the par-3 11th hole.

"I just suck at chipping," said Hovland, reflecting on the 11th hole.. "I definitely need to work on my short game and was definitely exposed there."

Hovland walked away with a triple-bogey six, but put himself back in contention when he chipped in for eagle at the par-5 15th.

Teater, who was also seeking a first PGA Tour win, made birdies at 15 and 17, before closing his final round with a par at the 18th to finish the tournament at 19-under par.

It looked as though Hovland and Teater were set for a playoff after Hovland left himself a lengthy putt to win, but he made no mistake and rolled it in the back of the cup in style to pick up the win.

"It's incredible, a special feeling," said the Norwegian.
