FRED FUNK, notoriously one of the shortest, albeit one of the most accurate, drivers on the PGA Tour has found a new TaylorMade 09 Burner driver that has enabled him to reach distances approaching 300 yards during the US Senior Open which he won at the weekend.
The 53-year-old from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, lost a play-off in last week’s Senior British Open at Sunningdale, yet followed that with an impressive performance in the US Tour equivalent by romping to a six-shot victory with a closing 65.
Funk has always been one of the shorter hitters in the game, and in his last full season on the regular PGA Tour in 2006 finished a lowly 194th in the ‘Driving Distance’ category with an average of just 272.8 yards - 17 yards shorter than the Tour average and nearly 50 yards behind big-hitting Bubba Watson (319.6)
But at Crooked Stick, the longest course in US Senior Open history, Funk kept up with the likes of Greg Norman using his new 9.5 degree Burner driver.
Funk, who used a full set of TaylorMade clubs in his bag as well as a TaylorMade TP Red ball, admits that a series of knee and shoulder injuries have restricted what he can do on the course.
"One thing I can't do is take a practice swing. But as long as I turn the whole way, it takes the stress off the shoulder. So I don't hit too many punch shots any more. That shot is basically out of my game."
