American Vaughn Taylor won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after local Californian Phil Mickelson missed a five-foot putt to force a play-off.

Mickelson, who drained a long birdie putt on 17 to reduce the deficit to one shot, needed to get up and down from short of the green for birdie on the last, but hit his putt through the break and watched on as the attempt lipped out.

"It never crossed my mind that I wouldn't make that one," said Mickelson, who was trying to win for the fifth time on the iconic layout.

World number 447 Taylor, who was a first reserve before play started, carded a final round 65 to win his first title in 11 years.

"I don't even have my tour card - now I am playing in the Masters," said Taylor, who is awarded a start in the first major of the year with the victory.
