Matthew Zions produced a strong ball striking performance with his trusted Cleveland Golf CG1 Tour irons to record his maiden European Tour title at the weekend.
The little-known Australian, whose best performance this season had been a tie for 13th at the Ballantines, posted an 8-under total to race clear of his rivals by seven shots - a record winning margin in the co-sanctioned European Tour and Challenge Tour event.
Zions’ laser-like CG1 irons, designed for consistent ball striking, control and forgiveness, found 76% of the greens in regulation in the wet and windy conditions.
His short game also complemented his long game with 12 out of 17 up and downs and 100% scrambling from the sand.
“Tee to green it was brilliant because the conditions made it so difficult to control your ball,” said Zions.
“It was a bit like a US Open out there when you look at the leaderboard with just four guys finishing under par.
“Everything felt good this week. My iron play was very strong and I holed plenty of putts which helps. I believe this victory was long overdue and I can now focus on some big tournaments in the next few weeks.”
The CG1 irons split cavity-back long irons and mid to short muscle back irons provide extra forgiveness and the workability and feel of a blade.
