Blixt earns maiden PGA Tour title

Swedish rookie Jonas Blixt earned his maiden PGA Tour title last night with a narrow one-shot victory at the Open.

The in-form 28-year-old, who finished third at the JT Shriners Open seven days ago, closed with a 3-under 68 to hold off American duo Tim Petrovic and Jason Kokrak on 16-under at CordeValle Golf Club.

Blixt collects $900,000 in prize money and becomes the third rookie to win on the circuit this season - joining John Huh in the Mayakoba Golf Classic and Ted Potter Jr at the Greenbrier Classic.

“This is unbelievable,” said Blixt, after being mobbed by his family and friends on the 18th green.

“I have no words right now. This is the biggest dream I ever had. It's really the greatest two weeks I've had on Tour.”

With the victory, Blixt also secures his PGA Tour status through the 2014 season.

Starting the final round two shots off the pace, Blixt raced into the lead with birdies at the opening two holes, only to fall back to where he started with consecutive bogeys at three and four.

But the resilient native of Nassjo bravely battled back with a clutch eight-footer at the par-4 sixth before holding his nerve on the back nine with birdies at the short par-5 15th and drivable par-4 17th.

Blixt, who ranks third on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting, then managed to recover from a poor approach shot on 18 by two-putting from 38-feet for victory.

“On the back nine, I was just trying to hit as many greens as possible and not get too cute, and it paid off,” Blixt said.

“I just went through my normal routine on 18. I had two shots at it. Even if I missed it, you've still got a playoff. That's what I told myself before the putt, then over the putt I just tried to do my normal routine. And it worked.”

Petrovic and Kokrak claimed their best finishes of the season by tying for second on 15-under, with the former having set the clubhouse target earlier in the round with a blistering 64.

Third-round leader John Mallinger carded a disappointing 72 to tie for fourth at 14-under alongside Fijian Vijay Singh, Brazilian Alexandre Rocha and American Jimmy Walker, who posted a superb final-round 62. Open Final Leaderboard
