Darren Clarke holed a superb birdie three from 15 feet to cut back Vijay Singh's lead to three shots in the third round of the Houston Shell Open at the Woodlands.

Singh led by seven at one stage, but the gritty Irishman, chugging on his cigar, refused to be shaken off and with three birdies in the last six holes completed a 67 for a 15 under par total.

The Fijian's round of 66 gave him an 18-under par score of 198, with Jose Maria Olazabal third on 13 under par after a nine-birdie 64.

Singh played the first 13 holes in a spectacular seven under, but then bogeyed the next and finished with four pars.
