Course vandals: What can be done?

Two golf clubs in Northampton are counting the cost after vandals went on a wrecking spree during a late-night rampage. Collingtree Park Golf Club, which has staged European Tour events, as well as Golfmagic outings, had seven greens and its driving range vandalised, while substantial damage was caused to 16 greens at nearby Delapre Golf Club.

The incidents happened between 10pm on Sunday and 6am on Monday morning.

At Collingtree Park, grass was churned up by a motorbike and at Delapre, serious damage was caused by an off-road vehicle. Police are asking any witnesses to call 08453 700 700 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Earlier this year vandals caused a total of over £20,000 worth of damage in three separate attacks at Bulwell Golf Club near Nottingham, stealing flagsticks and setting fire to three cars, while at Oaklands Park at Chalfont St Giles, Bucks, stamping on and cutting up greens.

In May security had to be stepped up at Torrey Pines, which staged the 2008 US Open, when vandals broke sprinkler heads, stamped on the signature hole 5th green and etched obscenities into the green and bunkers.
