Silky smooth: Goosen

It looked like an act of desperation last year when Retief Goosen, whose pure stroke brought him a pair of US Open titles, switched to the belly putter. Then again, it appears all the top players are doing that these days.

Although the South African continues to chop and change between the long and conventional length TaylorMade Corza Ghost Spider, Goosen has surprisingly won the putts per round statistic for the first time in his stellar career.

Goosen, who had never previously finished better than 49th in the putting stats over the last five years, ended the season with a vastly-improved 28.3 putts per round after finding 12.4 greens on average per round. But despite wielding the flatstick with greater confidence in 2011, the Goose failed to land a title with just three top-three finishes.

Elsewhere, David Howell continued his impressive putting performance as he ranked inside the top ten for the eighth consecutive year.

Putts per round standings

1 Retief Goosen (RSA) 28.3
Tetsuji Hiratsuka (Jap) 28.4
3 Brett Rumford (Aus) 28.5
Thaworn Wiratchant (Tha) 28.6
5 David Howell (Eng) 28.7
