Heard the one about the salesman, the policeman and the golf pro?
Well it’s no joke but they will be playing at the Compass Group English Open at the Forest of Arden next Wednesday.
Export sales manager from Merseyside, Stephen Robinson, and police sergeant Mike White from Wiltshire entered our competition to win one of two places in the curtain raiser to the European Tour event and both came out of the draw to partner one of Titleist’s top Tour pros.
Needless to say, both were delighted and courtesy of Titleist, who will also be handing over a dozen of their latest Pro V1 balls, they will have the time of their lives.
Steve (43), a regular contributor to the Golfmagic Forum, is the 17-handicapper father of two Samuel (11) and Ellen (9) both of whom also play and have their own sets of clubs.
He has been playing 30 years but this will be the first time he’s played with a pro and though a little nervous is looking forward to it ‘with a mixture of excitement and trepidation’
Steve says he carried a 10-degree Snake Eyes driver, Progen fairway woods and Alien DS irons, with a Ping Anser putter. He usually plays with Dunlop Total Performance balls but is looking forward to trying out the Titleist Pro V1 balls.
Mike (37) is a police sergeant based at Melksham and with a handicap of 0.8 has represented Wiltshire since 1993. He has been playing golf since the age of five and been off single figures since he was 16. He's married with sons Bradley (7) and Rhys (4).
He has a little more experience in top competition having played with and against the likes of current pros David Howell, Luke Donald, Jamie Donaldson and Andy Beal when they too were amateurs.
He has won the West Wilts club championship for the past three years and holds course records at his own club (61) and Golf des Fontenelles in France (70).
However, he’s greatly looking forward to the challenge of competing at the Forest of Arden.
Says Mike: "It was only as the result of golfmagic’s last-minute chaser email that I entered the competition and I’m really glad I did."
He uses a Callaway HawkEye Titanium driver (10 deg), Yonex ADX 3-wood, Titleist 962 irons and an Odyssey White Hot 3 putter.
We have asked both Steve and Mike to report back with a pro-am report next week.
