Harrington - defending

Fresh from his victory in the Hong Kong Open, Padraig Harrington defends his Target World Challenge title, hosted by Tiger Woods at Thousand Oaks, California, tomorrow (Thursday).

Again he faces the toughest opposition led by Woods (newly-crowned PGA Tour player of the year), Vijay Singh (the Tour’s leading money-winner) and nine of the world’s top 20 players including Darren Clarke, Mike Weir, Davis Love and Kenny Perry.

Also among the 16 invitees are Open champion Ben Curtis and US PGA winner Shaun Micheel, playing for a first prize of $1.2million.

"It’s another outstanding field," says Woods "The combination of these strong players and a challenging course will provide a great show for the fans."

Irishman Harrington shot a course-record 9-under-par 63 in the third round last year to take the lead, then in a thrilling finish, held off Woods to win by two strokes.

*Woods is still fuming over the revelation by a South African game reserve owner Adrian Shamwari, that he and Swedish girlfriend Elin Nordegren had got engaged just before the Presidents Cup matches.

"It was such a great moment in our lives, and he cheapened the experience because he was so self-serving," said Woods. "The only positive out of the whole trip is that Elin didn't say no.

"Saying we were uncomfortable and totally shocked is an understatement. I'm disgusted about the way he handled things. I had been planning to ask Elin to marry me for months and wanted to do it in a private, unique atmosphere."
