England's Andrew Johnston claimed his maiden European Tour title following a nerveless display in the final round of the Spanish Open at iconic Valderrama.

Johnston, 27, finished the tournament at 1-over par to oust Holland's Joost Luiten by one shot, with tournament host Sergio Garcia back in third.

The newly-promoted world number 125 becomes the first player to win a European Tour event with an over par score since Justin Rose at the 2013 US Open.

It had been 20 years since a regular event had been won over par with Ian Woosnam shooting the same score to win the Scottish Open at Carnoustie in 1996.

Despite having previously owned two Challenge Tour titles, the man nicknamed "Beef" may very well have just become a new fan favourite - especially after what he said during his post-tournament interview.

Johnston, using a full bag of Titleist equipment, performed impeccably off the tee at a blustery, tree-lined Valderrama, finding 78.6% of the fairways for the week, and he also led the greens in regulation on 70.8%.
