Paul Lawrie, the current Open Champion pulled out of the US Open yesterday citing his groin injury he picked up at the Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth three weeks ago.

The Aberdonian will be the first Open Champion to miss the US Open for 34 years and he was advised by his physiotherapists to pull out to avoid further injury.

Five times Open Championship winner Peter Thomson, was the last player to miss a US Open while defending Open Champion. He opted to miss the not 1966 Open at The Olympic Club near San Francisco.

Lawrie hopes to return to a full schedule within the next few weeks and be ready to defend his Open title at St. Andrews July 20-23.
