Ryder Cup winner Colin Montgomerie became a hero of thousands of sufferers from lung cancer this week, when he helped to raise much needed cash for the British Lung Foundation at Sunningdale.

Over £22,000 was raised from a charity auction at the Third annual Colin Montgomerie Celebrity/Am, thanks chiefly to a bunch of celebrities, including Gary Lineker, Desmond Lynam, Bruce Forsyth and Ian Wright.

At the end of it all Monty and his wife Eimear doubled the money to boost the charity funds.

Said Margaret Simpson, regional manager for the British Lung Foundation: "We’re delighted how successful the day was and how generous all our golfers were during the auction. It was fantastic to have Colin playing for us. He rightly received a standing ovation not only for his generosity but for his part in the European Team’s success."

*Colin Montgomerie is set to produce his autobiography ‘The Full Monty’ at the end of November.
