Colin Montgomerie will be forgiven if he dozes off during today’s US Open qualifier at Walton Heath.
The Ryder Cup captain didn’t sleep last night after driving a 900-mile round trip from Wentworth to his Perthshire home… just to get a putter!
“Who in their right mind would do that? But yes, I did,” said the eight time European Tour Order of Merit winner. “I putted like an idiot [at the BMW PGA Championship] and played like one too.”
“I left Wentworth at 2pm, was home at 8pm, had tea with the family, left at 11pm and got to Walton Heath just after 6am.
But the lack of sleep didn’t seem to do the Scot any harm after opening the 36-hole qualifier with a 4-under 68.
81 players are battling for 11 spots at the Olympic Club in a little more than two weeks. Stay tuned to Golfmagic for the full list of qualifiers.
