David Duval has been in negotiations with Nike about a possible sponsorship deal that would see him kitted out in full. Signing Duval would be seen as a scoop for the American company, as Duval is the only other player to have been ranked world number one in the past three years, apart from Tiger Woods.

Although currently ranked as world number four (behind Ernie Els, and Phil Mickelson), Duval is often hailed as the one player most likely to get close to Tiger Woods in the world stakes.

Woods signed a five year deal with Nike earlier this year, and since doing so, the market share of Nike golf balls has increased from less than 1% to over 5%.

David Duval is currently locked in to a deal with Titleist, but having returned from an injury lay off, seems to be moving away from his current sponsors. There is believed to be a get out clause in his Titleist contract.

Nike have signed some other big names in recent weeks. These include Stewart Cink and Franklin Langham. However, Nike have not had it all their own way. Titleist have been doing some deals of their own, which include the signings of Davis Love III, Jesper Parnevik, and Phil Mickelson – all of whom are in the top 12 in the world.
