Rising Portuguese talent Tomás Melo Gouveia has been crowned U18 boys champion at the Oceânico World Kids Golf Championship at the stunning Amendoeira Golf Resort.
Entertaining 94 stars of tomorrow from 11 different countries, competing across 18 categories, the field descended onto two of Oceânico Golf’s finest championship courses designed by Ryder Cup legends Sir Nick Faldo and Christy O’Connor Jnr.
Creating the feel of a professional Tour event, the tournament counted each player’s gross score towards their Championship total. Juniors aged ten to 17 played 18 holes a day, while children under ten played nine holes.
Gouveia carded the lowest total of the championship with an exquisite effort of 3-over, before labelling the victory as the best of his golfing life.
“This has been the most special week of my golfing life and I would like to thank everyone involved from Oceânico Golf for putting on such a fantastic tournament,” said Gouveia, winner of the senior boy’s category.
“Both the courses, facilities and accommodation have been spectacular and I thoroughly recommend any aspiring young golfer takes up the opportunity to play next year.
“I really felt as if I was playing in a Tour event this week with the incredible buzz, and it is made even better by having my parents here to support.”
Elsewhere, there were nine victories for youngsters fromt the United Kingdom, including Nathan Brader, who fired a 7-over total in the U14 boys gross.
Oceânico claims its Faldo course bears all the hallmarks of the six-time major champion and provides a stern, but fair test of golf, while the Oceânico O’Connor Jnr course demands accuracy off the tee to avoid the numerous water hazards.
“We are delighted that this year’s event has been so popular and has run so incredibly smoothly, showcasing our fantastic facilities," said Oceânico Golf’s CEO Chris Stilwell.
“It’s a real pleasure to see these promising young golfers having so much fun in a competitive environment. The Championship continues to grow year on year and we are looking forward to building on this momentum next year.”
