Taylor Made tour pro Ian Garbutt talks to GOLFmagic

Fri, 26 May 2000

At the recent FA Golf day, sponsored by Taylor Made, GOLFmagic managed to grab a few words with tour pro Ian Garbutt. This is what he had to say:

If you weren't a professional golfer, what would you do?
"I never really thought about it to be honest. I would have liked to have been involved in sport of some sort. I started playing golf at the age of 8, and was off scratch at 16".

What was the biggest mistake you have ever made during a competition, and what were the repercussions?
"As an amateur I once signed for a 68 when I shot 67. It cost me the course record".

Is life on tour the 'perfect life'?
"Well you can't really complain, because its something I enjoy doing, and you can earn good money doing it. It can be a bind at times with all the travelling, but at the end of the day it's what I choose to do".

Which tour event offers the best social life?
"The Scandinavian Masters can be a good one when you play at Malmo. It's light all night and its lovely. You can sit outside all the nice bars. There's some nice scenery".

What's your favourite topic of conversation away from golf?
"I like talking about football".

Who are your sporting heroes?
"The one I always looked up to when I was younger was Seve Ballesteros. Outside of golf I admired Ian Botham".

If you could play a film or TV role, who or what would it be?
"I'd like to play the part of Carl out of Caddy Shack - the green keeper". (More of a comedy than a big film role).

Do you have any golfing superstitions?
"I don't use red tee pegs - red spells danger".

In order of importance, which Major would you like to win, and why?
"The Open - it has the longest tradition, its the oldest. I think it's the best of all the Majors".

Ian will be playing his first round at the VOLVO PGA Championship at Wentworth today. He tees off at 15:20 in the 49th group of 52. Watch out for his progress on GOLFmagic - Good Luck !!
