The Players Championship is often referred to as the 'Fifth' Major Championship in World golf. And with the second strongest field behind the Open Championship out of all tournaments Worldwide, they now have a purse worth more than any of the Major Championships and a first prize of over $1m.

In an announcement today by US Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem, the 2000 Players Championship will have the biggest purse of all the golf events worldwide.

Finchem said the total purse has increased by $1 million to $6 million, with a first-place prize of $1,080,000 -- both of which are new records.

Brian Goin, tournament director for The Players Championship said today:

"This tournament deserves the largest purse with the field that we have," "I believe that the winner should probably walk away with the most money on the Tour. If you take a look at this tournament and the field and the golf course that they play, this purse represents that perfectly.
"It's appropriate that we raise this purse to this level because I think we need to set ourselves apart from the rest of the events that are out there because this tournament does that in a lot of different ways and this is just one of them."

World number two David Duval will defend his title at Sawgrass in two weeks time in his hometown of Jacksonville Florida.
