Colin Montgomerie and Seve Ballesteros will be awarded honorary degrees by the University of St Andrews for their achievements in the game of golf. The two respective Captains of the inaugural Seve Ballesteros Trophy at Sunningdale will be awarded the honours just before the millennium Open, held on The Old Course in July.

Ballesteros' finest major achievement came on the Old Course came in 1984 when he ended Tom Watson's dream of equalling Harry Vardon's six Open wins by pipping the Kansan to claim the second of his three Claret Jugs.

Montgomerie, who had topped the European rankings for the past seven years, was part of the Scotland team who won Alfred Dunhill Cup on the Old Course in 1995.This year will be Monty's best opportunity to claim the Open Championship on home territory.
