Six of the Best... US Open 2011

Record-breaking Rory

Bethesda might be an odd-sounding word, yet it translates into the Hebrew word Bethsaida, meaning house of healing. So I suppose it was only fitting Rory McIlroy should choose to close the wounds of Augusta in the wealthy suburb of Washington by smashing all sorts of US Open records in the process.

McIlroy, aged just 22 years, one month and 15 days old, became the youngest champion of this fabled event since amateur Bobby Jones in 1923 and the youngest since Tiger Woods claimed the Masters in 1997.

Leaving the field in his wake from start to finish, McIlroy became the quickest player in the 111-year history of the US Open to reach 10-under (after 26 holes), the first player to go beyond 12-under, reaching as much as 17-under on Sunday. He also posted the lowest 36 and 54-hole totals.
