Slow start for Curry, Griffiths

Britons on par in US qualifier

Paul Curry and David Griffiths, the Britons attempting to join Luke Donald in the final qualifying for the 2002 US PGA Tour, have made a level par start in Florida.

Both need to be among the top 19 best scores in Stage Two at Orange County National, near Orlando, Florida but started with even par rounds of 72 over the undulating lakeside course and lie in a tie for 37th place after the first of four rounds.

Ty Tryon the 17-year-old American star of the future leads the way with a nine under par 63.

Tied for second place, is Indian-born Star Trek fan, Daniel Chopra from Sweden after a seven under par 65, with former European Tour winner Matthias Gronberg tied 19th after a 70.

At Oak Valley, California, Richie Coughlan, the former Walker Cup player from Ireland started with a three over par 75 and at Panama City Beach in Florida, Chris Hanell of Sweden began with a one-under 71 to be 15th.
