One of the top-rated fairway woods of the season

Need To Know

A real boomer - extremely long and accurate; Solid alignment aid; Sweet sensation at impact
Shaft a little too light; Perhaps goes too far - up there close to driver distance
Our score:
PRICE: £179.00 YEAR: from 2013

Callaway tell us the fairway woods are the longest they’ve ever made, thanks to its Forged Speed Frame Face Cup that has been constructed from stronger steel. According to Callaway’s testing, the clubs are at the USGA limit for spring-like effect.

The matte grey crown with black face and large, deep profile instilled me with confidence at address, while the traditional Callaway chevron acted as a nice alignment aid in amongst the silent orange and grey colours at the top and bottom of the crown

The X Hot fairway features Callaway’s thinnest ever casting technology in an all-titanium head and this creates a lighter swing weight and overall configuration.

While the white standard Project X Velocity felt a little too light for my liking, the X Hot provided a sweet sensation at impact and explosive feel off the face – a similar trait found in the X Hot iron and driver.

As we all know by now, the X Hot is a real distance enhancer across the range, and this fairway wood was no different. It provided me with decent yardage and accuracy on off-centre hits and was by far the longest 3-wood I've trialled this season, playing perilously close to driver distance.

Of five shots struck off the deck using Protracer to garner my shot data, and having warmed up for a good ten minutes, I averaged a 228-yard distance and 203-yard carry, with a total offline distance of five yards. Impressive.

A slight negative is that it's not the easiest to launch in the air but at the same time, it aids decent workability, particularly for my natural draw.

One of the top-rated fairway woods of the season and the longest by some distance, alongside the RBZ Stage 2. Say hello to more eagle putts

Pro Verdict - PGA pro Grant Guerin

A real boomer. I like how Callaway has brought the CG towards the face of club. This not only improves the distance off a tee peg, but helps give a little distance boost from the deck. Large face also looks appealing at address.
