As I’m sure it is with a lot of double-figure handicappers, those pesky sub-100 yard shots are the bane of my golf game.

And to make it worse I just couldn’t find a wedge which I felt confident standing over, with a pitching wedge the highest-lofted club in my bag as I would opt instead to punch an 8-iron along the ground to the green – far more effective on the links courses I’m acclimatised to – or try the pesky three-quarter swing.

So when the new Cleveland 588 RTX cavity back wedges, one 52-degree in satin chrome and one 56-degree in black pearl, fell onto my desk, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get over my fear.

My first impressions were good. As a traditionalist, I prefer the look of the original 588, but the bars in the cavity are designed to increase forgiveness and stability and look stylish too, while the small Cleveland Golf logo medallion is a splendid touch.

So how did they perform? I took them for a spin the very next day and almost dreaded the first time I was left with an approach between 80 to 110 yards. I needn’t have worried. Faced with a downhill lie, I set up, took a deep breath and just imaged I was putting my 8-iron through it.

The weight of the clubhead, the wider sole – more akin to the CG16 range of yesteryear – and the “ingenious” Rotex Face Pattern promote a smooth swing and a solid performance you would normally associate with forgiving irons.

The laser milled technology also makes the 56 particularly effective from the greenside sand traps, while the sounds at impact is lovely, everything you would expect from a Cleveland wedge.

But don’t think it was a fluke. These two wedges have been in my bag for several rounds now and we’re getting on very well indeed. I’m attacking flags from 100 yards in and my confidence from this range is at its highest – and you can’t put a price on that. (Well, £75 per wedge.)

They won’t be leaving my bag for a long time. If you’re struggling with that kind of distance, I highly recommend you do the same. At that price, you can’t possibly go wrong.
