The Old Course Hotel at St Andrews has been named the world's fifth best golf resort in a poll conducted by CNNGo - travel arm of the giant American news network.
It features below American resorts Pinehurst, Kiawah Island, Pebble Beach and The American Club (also owned by the Kohler hotel empire) but above sixth-placed K Club near Dublin, making it best of Britain and Ireland.
It scored maximum marks for its golf facilities - Dukes course and access to the complex of St Andrews' courses - and very highly for its food and beverage.
“Having breakfast overlooking the Old Course, knowing you're going to be playing it in an hour or so, must be every serious golfer's idea of heaven,” said reviewer Tony Smart.
“Spending a week here and playing all the great courses around St. Andrews is golfing nirvana. And exploring this wonderful old town is the icing on the cake.”
Completing the Top Ten list were Sotogrande, Mission Hills, Fancourt and Quinta do Lago.
