Parkland golf at its absolute finest

Bernard Darwin once summed up the experience of Stoke Park as “a beautiful estate, where very good golf can be played,” adding, “We may also sit on the terrace or in the garden and give ourselves solely to loafing.”

Certainly on the golf courses there will be no loafing,  though visitors and members are encouraged to take advantage of the well-stocked, centrally-situated halfway house in order to get their second wind in preparation for an of the three back nine options.

In my review I could tell you that several scenes from the first Bond feature Golfinger were filmed here, that Colin Firth and Hugh Grant played a scene from Bridget Jones' Diary in the fountain, or that major champions Peter Thomson, Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo were among those who played Pro-Ams around the original 18 holes.

But that would trivialise a great golf destination for club golfers keen to experience the scenery and the demands of three challenging nine-hole loops that have the quality and style of the building that dominates the estate.

I recommend you make a date with Stoke Park and savour the atmosphere of one of the best pure golf venues in England.
