San Lorenzo’s 18th hole

Free golf is being offered by Serenity Golf at two of its exclusive courses on the Portuguese Algarve.

But to qualify for rounds on the San Lorenzo and Penina Championship courses, you have to stay at either the Le Meridian Don Filipa or Le Meridian Penina Golf and Resort hotels.

You can get up to three free rounds a week on the impeccable San Lorenzo course plus other savings if you stay at the Don Filipa, where prices start from £499 per person for seven nights.

Complimentary golf is also offered at Penina, which has staged the Portuguese Open on several occasions. Prices start from £453 for seven nights. Flights from Gatwick to Faro are included in both offers.


Princess course, Bermuda

The island paradise of Bermuda is home to eight challenging courses and provides an all-year-round destination for those seeking top quality golf.

Now Bermuda Tourism has launched a dedicated website, providing a one-stop shop for those planning to find out what’s available. As well as detailed information on its golf courses, it includes a downloadable golf brochure, online booking facilities, weather updates, tournaments, packages and and a photographic gallery.

Courses include Port Royal, Mid-Ocean and the latest at Tucker’s Point as well as the established Riddell’s Bay, Belmont Hills and Ocean View complexes, each boasting a signature hole and views of the sea from almost every tee.

Prices for a seven-night break in a standard room at the Fairmont Southampton Resort, on one of the daily British Airways return flights from Gatwick, start at £1,295 per person (based on two sharing) and include unlimited golf on the Southampton Princess course.

GB Airways is to open a new base at Manchester airport operating flights to Spain and the Canary Islands, Madeira, Cyprus and Malta – good news for golfers.

From next May they will operate daily flights to Malaga, three weekly flights to Malta, two to Paphos and weekly flights to Funchal and Tenerife (South) destinations already served by the airline from Gatwick.

Return fares including taxes will start at: Malaga £99, Madeira £189, Malta £119 and Paphos £149, Tenerife £129.

Work has started on the exclusive Monte Rei Golf and Country Club in the Portuguese Algarve. Jack Nicklaus, will oversee the design of its course built around five lakes.

It will have five par-5s and five par-3 holes, using Bermuda grass and is due to open in Spring 2006.

Set in over 1000 acres in the Eastern Algarve, between Vila Real de Santo Antonio and Tavira, the Monte Rei complex has breathtaking views of the sea against a backdrop of the dramatic Serra do Caldeirão mountains.

Marston Hotels – which operates four courses in England - is offering some great winter deals for golfers looking for a day out for as little as £21.95.

At Hellidon Lakes, near Banbury, Aldwark Manor (York), Coulsdon Manor (Croydon) and Hythe Imperial (Kent) you can enjoy an ‘early starter’, including breakfast, 18 holes and soup and sandwiches, for less than £22 each.

Alternatively, if you tee off between 11am and 1pm, there’s coffee and bacon rolls, golf and two course meal from £23. They’ll even let you play unlimited golf from 1pm during December and January for £7.50 – but you’ll need to play quickly to get the best value!
